The 7 Most Common Hand-Fighting Mistakes Young Defensive Linemen Make (And How to Fix Them in 10 Minutes)

You’ve watched your child work hard. You’ve invested in defensive line training. But on Friday nights… he’s still stuck on blocks.

He gets his hands up, but then nothing happens.

If this sounds familiar, your defensive lineman is likely making one (or more) of the 7 hand-fighting mistakes below. The good news? Most can be fixed in a single 10-minute drill session.

At Elite Defensive Line Academy, we’ve watched hundreds of defensive line training sessions across Houston. The gap between an average player and a game-wrecker isn’t strength. It’s hand fighting efficiency.

Let’s fix it.

Mistake #1: The “Patty Cake” Punch

What it looks like: Your player extends both arms and lightly slaps the offensive lineman’s chest. No jolt. No separation.

The fix: Teach a violent, single-hand strike (not two hands). The goal is to stop the OL’s momentum cold. Drill this with a heavy bag: 10 reps striking with the right hand, 10 with the left. The bag should jerk backward.

Mistake #2: Hands Too Wide (The “Airplane”)

What it looks like: Elbows flared out, hands outside the OL’s shoulder pads. The OL simply swims over the top.

The fix: “Thumbs to the armpits.” Your player’s hands should strike inside the frame – on the numbers or the sternum. Use tape on a dummy to mark the strike zone.

Mistake #3: The Late Reaction

What it looks like: Your player watches the OL punch first. He’s always playing catch-up.

The fix: Be the first striker. In a 3-point stance, teach the “bang” step: front foot down, hands fire simultaneously. No exceptions. Run the “mirror drill” – two linemen face each other; first to land a controlled punch wins.

Mistake #4: Punching, Then Dropping Hands

What it looks like: A good initial strike, then both hands fall to waist level. The OL now controls the chest.

The fix: “Velcro chest.” After each punch, hands must return to the OL’s chest plate before the next move. Drill: 10 rapid-fire punches on a shield, keeping contact between each punch.

Mistake #5: Not Locked Elbows (No Power Transfer)

What it looks like: Arms are bent. The OL just leans back, and your player has no leverage to shed.

The fix: Elbows straight at impact. This transfers hip power through the arms. Have your player punch a wall from 6 inches away – bent elbows create a thud; locked elbows create a slap.

Mistake #6: Only Using the Palms

What it looks like: Fingers are open and relaxed. The strike is a push, not a grab.

The fix: Grab cloth. After the punch, immediately grip the jersey at the sternum. This lets you control the OL’s pads. Drill: “Punch, grab, rip” – hit, seize the cloth, and rip across the face.

Mistake #7: No Follow-Through (The One-Hit Wonder)

What it looks like: One punch. Then stop. Wait for the OL to recover.

The fix: Combination hand fighting. Teach the 1-2: right-hand strike → left-hand rip. Or strike → swim. No single punch wins. Drill: 3 seconds of continuous hand fighting on a bag – punch, move, punch, move.

How to Fix All 7 in 10 Minutes (The Elite DLine Drill Circuit)

You don’t need a full practice. Set a timer:

  • Min 0-2: Mirror strikes (no bag) – focus on bent elbows & inside hands
  • Min 2-5: Heavy bag – 10 violent single-hand strikes per side
  • Min 5-7: “Punch, grab, rip” – 15 reps
  • Min 7-10: Live hand fighting with a partner or coach – 30-second rounds

Do this three times per week. In one month, your child will stop losing the hand fight.
